Cultural remnants of African-American contribution in Brooklyn

During the November 2015 board meeting of community board two (North Brooklyn), Council Woman Laurie Cumbo brought up an interesting discussion when she was embroiled in a controversy about co-naming streets. She claimed that she didn’t know of any remnants of any markers of the African American community in this district. “Are we making decisions unbeknownst to us that in actuality is wiping out a reality that a strong African American community lived here…It is important that we have markers that confirm their strength, their will, their manpower, their contributions to this particular community,” she said.

This map is a pilot version of a project to document a city that is changing rapidly with little acknowledgement of a community that revitalized it.
