In September 2015, the Department of Education put forward a proposal to rezone PS 307 to accommodate students from PS 8. PS 307, a Title 1 school in Vinegar Hill is predominately made up of low-income students of color largely from the Farragut Housing project that is right across the school. PS 8 a severely overcrowded in Brooklyn Heights is made up of affluent white children as well as a small population of Farragut children.
There are no homogenous groups in one school or the other. But the loudest voices as community meetings were those of dissent- those who claimed that the plan focused too much on the needs of PS 8. Tune in for a snapshot of the rezoning conflict.
